Our Purpose

What is Lexington, Kentucky? The obvious answer would be that it is a city. Well then what is a city? Again, the obvious answer would be a large town where there are a lot of noise, people, businesses, buildings, and things going on. However, if you think a bit deeper about what truly defines a city, you should come to realize that only one of those components gives a true, significant definition of what a city is.
Lexington, Kentucky of today, in the year 2012, is not the same Lexington, Kentucky that William McConnell founded in 1775, nor is it the same city it was a decade ago. The question is certainly raised: Why is Lexington 2012 not the Lexington of two hundred years ago or even last decade? The answer isn’t so much about what is in Lexington, but more so who resides within it.

We would like to propose the idea that a city is not defined so much by the things in it, but more by the people you live there. It is a city’s citizens that shape and mold its identity. With the flow of people in and out of the city, there goes with them the flow of thoughts, ideas, and drive. Cities are always slowly changing their identity to reflect the cultural changes that occur amongst its citizens.

Our group has each been assigned a restaurant of a different culture to do research on to help support our purpose and bring awareness of these cultures to those who may not have ever considered them before. We hope to provide some history of Lexington, and compare the old city to how it is today. We believe that the different cultures all coming together and combining has impacted the citizens and those who have immigrated to this area. Through the focus and research of what may seem as just a nice, new place to eat, all of our research together will hopefully bring awareness to the citizens of this city of how much Lexington has grown into a culturally diverse city in comparison to how it once was.
